What is KP?
Keratosis pilaris, also known as 'chicken skin' or 'KP', is the appearance of small, hard red bumps that cause the skin to feel rough and dry. Bumps tend to appear on the back of arms but can also show up on the thighs, bum and, in some cases, the face. Despite a serious-sounding name, though, keratosis pilaris is completely harmless.
What Causes KP?
Causes of KP are not fully understood but it is genetic in more than half of those affected. Hence, it is usually found in more than one member of the same family. It is more common in adolescence, gradually decreasing in severity over the years. It is closely related to other dry skin conditions and tends to get worse in cold weather when the humidity is lower.
